I was born in the housing projects of New Orleans, Louisiana. The neighborhood where I was born, and the other areas we lived until finally reaching high school, were almost exclusively African-American. My brothers and I were the only Caucasians who attended any school we attended. Every single day I had to literally fight for my life, as this was a time of growing racial tension in the late 60’s and early 70’s.
It seemed that we moved constantly. In the 10 years that I attended school I went to 12 or 13 different schools. In one particular year I actually attended 3 different schools! Running from bill collectors, landlords and school counselors who grew suspicious of the bruises and constant injuries was a dominant theme of my younger life.
I left my mother’s home on my 15th birthday and I have not returned home since. My life continued to spiral out of control. I filled my life with activities that may seem exciting to some, but were actually attempts to keep me from facing the reality of my life. Time spent in the military, law enforcement and working as an EMT and a Registered Nurse all left me feeling empty and unfulfilled.
Beginning in my early 20’s I began searching for “something” that would help me make sense out of my life. I spent years looking into different faiths but never returning to the seeds of Christianity that had been planted by a high school friend so many years before. The more I searched the more empty my life seemed to become.
The Lord used a wonderful friend, a beautiful young woman who eventually became my wife, to lead me back to Him. I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior and I have served Him in any and every way I can ever since.
Shortly after accepting Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior I was asked to play bass guitar with the worship team at our church. Using a borrowed guitar, I began to play in worship of my Lord. Before long I was also asked to help with the youth and began teaching Sunday School.
