I became a believer during the summer between my junior and senior year in college through the personal witness of my family. I grew up Catholic and, though I had a great “head” knowledge about Jesus, very little of that affected the way I lived. I had been an Altar Boy, Eucharistic Minister, and even worked in the school chapel during my time in college, but while I hoped to make it to heaven someday, I had no assurance and knew that within myself I had no ability to live a Godly or even God-centered life. During the summer of 1995 that all changed. One by one my immediate family became saved. Through their personal witness and prayer, the Holy Spirit began an active pursuit of me.
On the evening of July 8, 1995 I needed to take something to the Post Office to mail. As I left the Post Office, a gentleman approached me outside and handed me a tract along with a statement along the lines of “Jesus is coming soon, you need to be ready.” Normally, I would have just ignored the statement or blown it off, but something about it rang true. The next morning, I decided to attend church with my family at the Assembly of God. The pastor was just starting a new series on the four cardinal doctrines of the church. I wept through the whole song service, and as the pastor preached about salvation, my heart was convicted. I almost ran to the altar in response to the invitation. My life has not been the same since.
