Paul Hughes's Testimony |

I accepted the Lord at age 7 in a little church my grandfather had founded. My family has always been heavily involved in church, attending 3 times a week, even mowing the grass and cleaning bathrooms. My mother usually plays the piano or organ. Growing up, my main extracurricular activity, other than church, was band: concert, marching, and stage.
After high school, I went off to a big state university. I never felt at home in the local Assembly, and sadly soon found it easier to sleep in on Sunday. In other words, I backslid, but thankfully still had certain standards, and never got into sex or drugs.
After college, I took a job in Houston, and felt a deep void in my life. I started looking for something meaningful, and was finally attracted to a newspaper ad for an A/G singles ministry. At first, the other singles did not seem very friendly, but I persevered, and in time became heavily involved in ministry, along with the church orchestra.
During that 2 years in Houston, I began to feel called to ministry. I read the whole Bible, and prayed hard for direction. One evening, I was strongly impressed that the Lord was sending me to Bible college. In a few weeks, I was there, and later felt called to attend seminary.
Over the years, I have found many obstacles to entering full-time ministry, principally because the Lord has yet to provide me with a suitable spouse. I believe that the Lord has kept me single, yet church people expect their pastor to be married. Still I have served 2 churches as Assistant Pastor and a third as Singles Director, which I did gladly, though I received only an occasional honorarium. While singleness has been a handicap so far, it remains true that I am free to pursue any opportunity or place of ministry to which the Lord may call me, without having to consider the welfare of children or the wishes of a spouse -- and that is what I intend to do at this time.
